On Oct. 4, Anchorage School District (ASD) freshmen go to the Dena’ina Center for a special event. The Academies Career Expo has hands-on learning experiences to help inform which Academy students join later in high school. It’s one of the first opportunities to showcase all that Academies of Anchorage offers our community.
Freshmen are preparing for the Academies Career Expo in their Freshmen Academy Career Exploration (FACE) class. The event provides in-person interactions to supplement what they’re learning about eight industry-themed areas. They include:
- Art, media and marketing.
- Business and information technology.
- Engineering and skilled trades.
- Health and human services.
- Hospitality and tourism.
- Law and public service.
- Natural resources.
- Transportation, logistics and distribution.
ASD and United Way had a goal of securing 50 businesses for the Academies Career Expo. We’re thrilled that more than 100 businesses are attending to engage with students. Professionals have coordinated with ASD Academy Coaches and members of our Community Impact team to design and run the exhibits. Each one highlights related career opportunities.
During the Academies Career Expo, students can ask questions, interview exhibitors, try interactive activities, explore supplies, participate in competitions and watch demonstrations. What do all these experiences result in? Freshmen are empowered to shape their own educational adventures. Learn how we support education.
When students understand what their careers could look like and connect with experts in the industries that they’re interested in, they’re motivated. They take charge of their education and do well in school. Academies and all the classes, events, activities and networking that come with it help students—which is ASD’s and our primary goal. Improved graduation rates, stronger Alaskan communities and a stable economy are excellent outcomes too.
