“No great thing is created suddenly. There must be time. Give your best and always be kind.” – Epictetus
Throughout civilization, there have been communities that focus their efforts on helping disadvantaged people. They’ve shared resources—be they time, space or items. These communities have expanded protections to honor people’s dignity. The ones that have taken these actions have often thrived…as long as they’ve kept doing them.
These communities did more than improve their own lives. They left legacies that people even today continue to look back on, mimic and further. Commit to build up our community.
Why are we offering this very brief reflection on charity, hospitality and philanthropy? Our community has the power to change lives and extend more support to all Alaskans. Day of Caring concentrates our efforts on projects that strategically invest in our community.
Day of Caring occurs on Tues., Sept. 10. We have opportunities for everyone:
- Community members, like you, can sign up for volunteer shifts.
- Workplaces can commit their employees to assist with projects.
- Nonprofits can notify us about their projects that need volunteers.
If you represent a workplace or nonprofit, email our Volunteer Engagement and Events Coordinator to notify us about your interest.
As in ancient times, a society, household or citizen may be secure. If history has taught us anything, though, life could change in a moment. Giving kindness, providing aid and embracing equity helps others. Those reasons alone are enough to act. However, doing them also ensures that you have those safeguards should you and your family need them.
For almost 70 years, United Way of Anchorage has committed to improving our community. For thousands and thousands of years, people have strived to make the world better. But reflecting on what Epictetus said, let’s remember: Great things take time. We must keep giving and being kind. Together, we are making a meaningful difference.
