Cold temperatures cause Alaskans’ heating bills to climb. While these costs affect us all, some households struggle to keep up with the increases more than others. These community members wonder How can we afford to keep our homes warm?
As Alaska continues to experience fluctuations in our winter weather, each of us wants to stay warm. Long before these rising heating costs began, we’ve recognized how cold homes affect Alaskans. Higher heating bills increase households’ vulnerability to hardships. Studies and our everyday observations confirm this fact. Alaskans living in cold homes have more health issues—both immediate and long-term, especially for children. They can also lose their heating service and can even become at-risk for experiencing homelessness.
This understanding prompted us to begin Walk for Warmth. Since its start in 2011, Walk for Warmth brings attention to the impact of cold homes on Alaskans. Each year that we host it we raise funds to help cover past-due heating bills for Alaskan households. For 2025, we’ve set a goal to raise $5,000 from individual donors. This support keeps Alaskan households warm, and it makes a real difference in community members’ lives.
We’ll combine these gifts with other donations.
- ENSTAR Natural Gas Company – $10,000.
- First National Bank Alaska – $5,000.
- Global Credit Union – $5,000.
Altogether, this $20,000 allows us to cover one month’s heating bill for many Anchorage homes. Will you help us turn up the heat on cold homes? You can make a donation, attend the event and share this blog to help Alaskans living in cold homes.
Let’s keep the heat on Alaska households.
